We built our own cars from what the streets threw away, milk tins pulled from dumpsites and gutters, wire, whatever we could find. We went hunting for parts in groups, and put them together with knives that cut us more times than we counted, sores we wore without thinking much of it. The adults around us called us kubolor boys while we worked, they saw dirt and mess and kids who wouldn't amount to much. They only came back around once the car was finished, happy with what we'd made, never with how we'd made it. Nobody saw what I see now, that building a working car from nothing, no training, no tools, no one teaching you, is its own kind of genius. With real materials and someone to teach us the science behind it, these hands might have built something the world had never seen.
